On a recent trip to NYC I made a first-time visit to the infamous Macy’s department store on 34th street. I was amazed to discover that almost all the buildings escalators (from the 3rd floor and up, and I saw one set going to the basement) are made of wood. Not just the side panels, but the actual steps themselves are wood, with giant grooves compared to those found on modern metal escalators.
If you’re visiting NYC and are in the area, pop in and have a look. Very cool. Posted a few more shots on flickr.
